How Long Does Local SEO Take? An Honest Timeline
It’s the first question every business owner asks me, and the one the industry answers worst. “It depends” is true but useless. Here’s the honest version: what actually happens month by month, what controls the speed, and how to tell a realistic timeline from a sales pitch. It’s also why my services are built around process and monthly reporting instead of promises.
Month 1: Foundations — Mostly Invisible
The audit, the Business Profile cleanup, category and service fixes, citation corrections, service pages. Expect little visible ranking movement — this month builds what everything else stands on. What you SHOULD see is deliverables: a written audit, a list of what was fixed, and a profile that’s finally complete. If a provider can’t show you work this month, that’s the warning sign — not the quiet rankings.
Months 2–3: First Movement
The profile settles, the review system starts producing, and early movement appears — usually first for less competitive searches and areas nearest your location. Impressions climb before positions do. This is the phase where the map pack factors start working together instead of individually.
Months 3–6: Compounding
Reviews accumulate, content and citations mature, and pack presence for your core services becomes a pattern rather than an occasional appearance. Calls and direction requests trend upward. Most businesses I work with feel the difference in this window — not as a switch flipping, but as a slope.
Month 6 Onwards: Hold, Then Expand
Rankings need defending: competitors keep working. The rhythm becomes reviews, fresh photos and content, and periodic re-audits — then expansion: new services, wider areas, a second push on the terms just outside the pack.
What Controls the Speed
- Your starting point: an established profile with reviews moves faster than a brand-new one.
- Competition density: ten rivals or two hundred changes everything.
- Review velocity: businesses that build a review habit outpace those that don’t.
- Consistency: three months of steady work beat one month of everything.
- Scope: one location and one service is a sprint; five locations is a programme.
Timeline Questions
Why did my competitor rank faster than me?
Usually they started earlier than you think — an older profile, more reviews, years of consistent data. You’re not comparing starts; you’re comparing your month two to their year three.
Can I speed it up by spending more?
More work per month compresses the foundations — but it can’t buy Google’s trust timeline. Reviews, history and authority accumulate at their own pace.
When should I worry that nothing is happening?
By month three you should see leading indicators: deliverables done, impressions rising, review count growing. By month six, position movement. Zero of everything is a problem — with your provider, not with SEO.
If I stop, do I lose everything?
Not overnight. Rankings decay over months as competitors keep working and data goes stale. Most businesses move to a lighter maintenance rhythm rather than stopping outright.
